I'd like to venture around the event next year. I need to do something outside the reigns of everyday society. Would you and G care to join? Perhaps some of your friends?

Doubtful. The event's gotten too big, and there's a question as to whether or not you'd even be able to get a ticket.

Case in point: last year was the first time Bman completely sold out of tickets. This year, they did a lottery system. Something like 130-150,000 people were vying for 55,000 tickets.

However! Regionals are a really good way to go. I just got back from Apogaea, and it was a blast. Same sort of feel, but a lot smaller. Some amazing stuff. This event sold out too, but it was 1300 tickets in 2 hours.

The authorities are also making some unhappy noises to reporters about BMan. Mostly about its size. NPR was reporting that the permit for 55k people was exceeded by 10k or more.

Do you think Burning Man has jumped the shark? It seems like an increasing number of long-time attendees think so.

There are rumors that the number had been exceeded a couple of years ago, but I don't know any hard data.

Yes, I think it's gotten too big and too much public awareness. I've been of that mindset for a few years now. Last time I went (in '05), I could see things starting to unravel a little at the edges. As it is, my heat tolerance has continued to diminish; realistically, if I go out again, I need to camp with an EMT who can give me a bag in the arm twice a day. And when you hit that point, perhaps it's time to rethink going.

I got what I needed out of Burning Man, and it quite literally changed my life. However, I don't think the event it is now is the one that meant so much to me--and that's okay.

Knowing that doesn't make it easier for me to accept change. I admire your grace at that.

I've heard various grumblings about "tourists" and such, and about how the event was changing in general. It's not something that's ever particularly appealed to me, but I seem to rub elbows with many who hear its siren song. I'm curious about where it's going. Will it implode under its own mass, or transform into something radically different from its genesis? I'll be watching with distanced interest.

Needless to say, it has became more obvious to me that is has become a spectacle more than it's intended purpose.

I'm just hoping that BMan will hit its 15 minutes of fame and become passe enough that the hipsters decide to fuck off and leave us alone in relative obscurity once again.

There's discussion of us going to the (very new, very small) Florida regional burn this year in November.

Perhaps it should be a requirement to bring contributions (entertainment, hospitality, etc.) to the festivities, else without contributions, pay a few multiples of a ticketed person with contributions. Kinda like that one saying, 'if you ain't helpin', get the fuck out of the way.' This could help detour the obnoxious 'I'm just here to get fucked up' personalities, promote a more creative culture, and let people who actually desire to participate, who potentially couldn't show up because all tickets have sold out, be present.

I'll be taking a week vacation to Puerto Vallarta Oct/Nov. Maybe I could take a couple weeks off entirely, and go to FL after Mexico. I certainly do have the time saved up.

One of the tenants of BMan revolves around "participation, not spectators." So, yeah, the "requirement" is already there. Hasn't helped yet.

Don't know when AfterBurn is happening this year, or whether or not we'll be able to pull off going. It'll probably come down to money. But if not this year, then next!

Of course, if you want to take extra time off in Nov, you could always come visit, even if we don't make it to FL . . . *winsome smile*

WTF! My car taxes came in and WENT UP! I spent 10 minutes arguing with the tax collector about how a 17 year old car cost more than last year, this obviously was a loosing argument and I never heard anything about a mill rate increase... bullshit!

in reply to n1leu in message #38486:
1) never argue with a tax collector, unless there is some clear reason that you should not be paying the tax. "It's not fair" or "I don't like it" and especially "I can't afford it" are not reasons. The collector is a functionary, and typically has no authority to grant exceptions. So you're arguing with the wrong person, and it'll just piss you both off.

2) Mill rates are typically set locally. I'm not aware of any mill rates that are set at the state level (doesn't mean they don't exist, I'm just ignorant of them). Did you vote in the election that would've set this rate? If not, you can't complain. If you voted against and got overruled, you still can't complain since you were in the minority.

3) welcome aboard. I think this might've been better placed in the "my day sucked" board.
