Aww, man! I LOVED high school! There was virtually no responsibility. Sure I had to work to make my money, but I had free room, board, and food, so all the money went into savings or into those things that I whimsically desired.
I realise that my highschool experience was way different from most people's, though. In middle school, I made some excellent friends, and we all shared ideals and ideas. We all valued the same things in life, so we were pretty tight knit - the kind of friends that have since come and gone, but never felt distant (in 15 years we could get together and feel like no time has passed).
At first, we sort of outcast ourselves - purposefully mocking and avoiding the sought-after, affluent, and frequently more attractive popular kids. Then, we decided that disliking people for anything other than their personalities or actions was lame, and that group distinction was even more lame. We all thought we were funny and awesome as shit. If nobody else did, we didn't care. If out of a group of every student in the school you could make one or two of your buddies laugh, it was worth it. We used to make fun of each other so terribly that people who met us for the first time couldn't understand how we culd be friends.
What made our little group evolve into what it was by graduation is that we actively sought out new and interesting people, the best of wich were usually sitting alone in the lunchroom. I mean, if you don't get on with most high school students, it's hardly a bad sign. Most high school students are dumb.
Anyway, by the time we left, we could hang out with most of the people in the school, and we could talk to everyone. The attitude (for the most part) was absolutely fantastic - friendly, helpful, united, etc... It was the people who thought they were better than everyone else who were outcast, because they were pricks.
As I understand it, very different from most people's high school experiences. I think it was just because of the unique values that we all posessed. Within our little circle of long-time friends, the coolest thing to do was to suprise everyone by doing something totally outrageous and hillarious - ANYTHING went if it could get a good laugh. the only people that we were ever mean to was eachother, and then, only when it was really funny. Nobody ever had sore feelings, because we could laugh just as hard at ourselves as we could at each other.
Ahhh... Memories... Damn, high school was fun. WTF? |
