I personally believe that you don't see virus attacks against OS X because most of the hackers writing viruses that attack Windows run OS X on their personal computers. Why would they want to write a virus that could impact their own computers??

Yeah. I love how when people can't back up their shit when arguing against someone who uses Macs, they just pull out the "fanboi" card as though that's an even more valid argument. "You use a Mac, you obviously don't know what you're talking about." *eye roll*

Have you been reading yourself? It's not about content at this point. Your very attitude makes any kind of rational discussion impossible. You sound like a middle-school kid who's mom was insulted. There's no way I can't play the fanboi card.

You absolutely refuse to admit that exploits exist in the wild, arguing that an "exploit" is only defined very narrowly. You might be technically right, within those narrow confines, but you can't even admit to that caveat.

Tortured souls make great writers. The corollary is that they can also make for lousy company. Bitter fiction is one thing. Perhaps you could dial back the bitter here a bit, hmm?

Aw, geez, not this shit again.

Some geek at a developer conference who hacks OS X for prize money, or some security guy who gets paid to find shit that's wrong who then finds something wrong and reports it, does not equal the same thing as the security holes that get exploited in Windows on a goddamned daily basis via viruses, malware, spyware, trojans, and so forth, and so on. You guys trying to claim it's the same thing is as retarded as saying having a building inspector find a broken lock on your back door is the same thing as having your fucking house robbed.

I don't care about the nerd-assed definitions you guys are trying to use concerning "exploits". These exploits essentially mean jack-shit and fuck-all if they're patched before they're actually, you know, exploited. The simple fact remains: there are no viruses, malware, or spyware for OS X. There are not now, there have not been in the entire ten-year run of its operation, and that is not entirely due to "security by obscurity" as many people here and elsewhere are trying to claim. End of story.

As for the "tortured souls" bit: hey, thanks for the armchair pop psych 101, "ponytail". But take your advice on bitterness and shove it up your ass, Mr. "This thing random person X did that I don't like deserves them having hot lead poured in their eye sockets" extremist. That, coming from me, is sayin' something.

Sorry, maybe i mispoke earlier if I set you off.

Security by obscurity is a phenomena, not an aspect for or against an OS. If you don't agree that the phenomena applies to OS X, then that's a difference of opinion.

I don't disagree that OS X may have done some smart things to avoid exploits. They have a better permissions management, they have a more efficient patching system. In general they lock down shit that stupid users typically misuse to the detriment of the system. They may be the fucking Alcatraz of operating systems, but that still doesn't negate the *possibility* that OS X still enjoys the effects of security by obscurity.

Whether or not there are viruses in the wild, or if it's just mistakes made by dumb users, in our tech office at school we have had to disinfect Macs running OS X from malicious code that was fucking their shit up. When I am back in the office I can ask our Mac guru what variations he has seen, because I simply never bothered to memorize what the diagnosis was.

Is OS X more secure relative to a naked Windows box? Pretty obviously. But the reasons why may be a contribution of intentional design as well as the nature of net-culture at large without insulting your precious OS X, alright?

I never said "security by obscurity" wasn't a reason OS X doesn't get drop-kicked by attacks the same way Windows does. But from the sound of your original post, and from the sound of all the online anti-Mac punditry out there, people are trying to paint it as the primary or even only reason OS X is more secure than Windows. That's demonstrably false.

I don't care whether you "insult" my "precious" OS X or not. I could honestly give a crap less what people think about it. I have no personal investment in OS X beyond using it every day and getting paid to write about it. I don't stick my dick in my MacBook Pro's USB ports, FFS. The only thing that "set me off" was your repetition, and subsequent clinging to, a widely espoused but illogical and easily debunked myth about OS X security.

Yeah, but that extra step can be a mighty deterrent, believe it or not. Considering that I use this photo in places Elsewhere and have already been outed once or twice as a result, I'm thinking that I ought to change my pic to something completely anonymous. Which is sad, as I love this pic.

So we're still cool, and I hope they work it out. Jealousy is a stupid reason to end a relationship especially when it's not validated by any actual action.

...when you can buy a printer and ink cartridges, cheaper than you can by the cartridges alone.

I went to Wal-mart (wrong in itself) to by ink cartridges for a cheap HP 7200 series printer that had been setting up for awhile. Much to my dismay, they wanted 59.96 plus tax for the two frigging cartridges… I wound up buying a new printer instead; a Cannon Pixma iP2600 with ink cartridges, and USB cable included. The cost? $32.00 plus tax for the whole shit and sha-bang. The really in-fucking-credible thing is, the same sized replacement cartridges for the Cannon, two feet away, costs over $42.00. Go figure. Seems it would make more sense to make the cartridges disposable instead of the printer.
