subject: re: No, autocorrect, I didn't mean ducked.
in reply to chuckster in message #25500:
By the way, most of the people I know and care about are, by default, Christians... or think they are. Some of them are even fundamentalist and/or evangelical. If there were more Muslims in my small, southern, rural town, I'm quite sure some of them would fall under the people I care about. I don't blame people for the religion they were brought up and brainwashed into... that is truly just an accident of birth and/or geography. But that doesn't keep me from recognizing the horrors and dangers contained within their religions, nor speaking out against them, or trying to protect myself from them when they try to impose their insanity on my life. As it turns out, it is the Islamic fundamentalists that are reeking havoc in the world now, not the Christian fundamentalists. (Side note: That may change under the Trump regime; a scary proposition in itself.) Nevertheless, if your uber sense of progressive, political correctness, overrides your ability to rationally see what is going on in the world, then I guess I'm wasting my time trying to pierce your own fundamental bigotry. See ya.

So. I recently went to Cali to help with the haul out of the family boat. While down there my mother said she wasn't able to take care of it any longer. More or less offering it to me.

Problem is I live more than 1500 miles away. And not just any miles, but one of the most challenging up hill passages one could sail. The winds are either fickle or full gale. And the current is a knot to a knot and a half the wrong direction the whole way.

I love the boat, but I cannot afford to have it trucked. I can't leave it unattended and gather it up later. And as much as I don't plan on spending the rest of my life at my current job, I just got promoted to management, and it would look better on a resume if I stuck with that for at least a year.

Did I mention it would take more than three weeks to sail it up here, probably solo, because who in thier right mind would want to make that kind of push, and even if I manage that, I'd have to find moorage. Balls. Seems like things never work out the way you imagine as a kid.

Not near where it's at now. And it rips through dock lines at a rather expensive rate in the rather bouncy harbor it is currently in.

Can you find a better harbor, maybe even farther away from you but easier and faster sailing to, or is that just pipe dreaming? Or what about a live in boat sitter/caretaker wiling to trade services for a place to live, or even renting it to a trusted party? Or am I just pipe dreaming again?

The building I work in has been sold. Companies have packed up and moved out of the building. Strong men have packed up some of our stuff, the reason being "they downsized that department all ready." And yet we go to work every day, and no one says anything to us about whether our company is staying, where we are moving to if we aren't or even if the company still exists anymore.

Oh. That is unfortunate. For both of you. Uncertainty has a stress all its own.

I work for a barge company that provides for Alaska. And in the course of one month we lost two tug boats and two barges to groundings. it's actually in the name "" tug and barge", yet I'm not sure if we have another tug or barge left in the fleet...

I got a dirty look from management when I suggested we change our name to "freight storage".

Well yeah, there is that! But I've been thinking about bringing charges against me, maybe suing and getting my general liability company to pay me a big settlement... or possibly quitting my job due to the harassment and applying for unemployment. Who knows, might get an unemployment check AND a crazy check. lol

The funny thing is that I am self-employed, per se, but technically an employee of myself because my business, that I am the sole owner of, is incorporated. Being an employee of my company, I have to pay unemployment (SUI) taxes on my wages to cover me if I ever get laid off and have to draw unemployment. So how do I do that, lay myself off or something? Anyway, I've been kidding for years that I intend to go into the unemployment office and ask if I could draw a check because I quit due to sexual harassment by the owner of the business. I figure if I pull it off just right, I can get two checks, and unemployment check, and a crazy check. :)

The real kicker is that you pay unemployment insurance for yourself, but you can't actually draw from it if you end up going out of business. Ain't it great?

Because someday, you might need it, and a small amount out of your employers pocket benefits a ton of people when they get laid off or suddenly fired. You never know when you're employer's just going to call it quits one day, and you're left finding a job without any income.

I say never because I do know. I have a city job, that is is virtually impossible to get fired from. If I do get fired, it will probably be for a reason that would make me ineligible for unemployment.

Once I retire, I won't be able to collect. I also, will probably never live to SS age, so thats yet another thing I pay into, and will never collect. It's frustrating, because I play by the rules, do everything I'm supposed to do, but get exactly ZERO of the benefits.
