Yes I do. Still slowly working on it. I'm currently spending my free time working on a couple other projects. It's finally cold here. Have had an awesome day myself. Put that in the appropriate board. How have you been?

Well for the past...eight months, working two jobs. Not much free time anymore, but hell, the money is nice. I'll be moving into a new house soon in a lower-mid class area. 4000+ sqft under $90K. Brick all around except the front. It's a four-plex now, but will be converting back to single family. The Dodge Stealth died a little over a year ago. Nearly killed a Ford Escort wagon, but managed to come up with a 2001 Mazda Millenia. It's a love/hate relation w/ that beautiful biawtch.

Yeah, subzero temps suck. Was hoping winter would just stay in the background a while longer...but the old fucker decided to appear.

I think i still have the templates, or something along the lines of the grill I was designing for you. I'd have to do some searching.

Expect Nothing.

The templates would be cool.

I actually like winter. I want to go skiing and boarding. I'd say this winter is a lot like taking a girl home from the bar only to realize she's a cardboard cutout, but it's rather a lot like not even finding the bar instead.

Awesome news about the house. Congrats.

subject: FPSN me.

I've got an old OS/2 machine I need to put on an NT domain and need to procure a copy of File and Print Services for Netware for NT/2k to do so. It's probably the insomnia, but I can't find the shit anywhere else online and I'd rather not buy it because well, I don't like spending money on things. Anyone sitting on this somewhere (I'm looking at you, Jade) that wouldn't mind sharing?

Also, I played with Vista today. I still think it sucks.

Supposedly the version 5.03 of that software runs on both 2k and 2k3, says this MS page. You can download it, free, legally, here.

And the consensus among IT Admins of all the public Universities here in Michigan is that all Vista technical issues will be dealt with by handing the affected student a copy of your favorite distro install disc.

subject: Windows Vista.
So I just bought a new laptop, and it came with windows vista home premium on it. I am giving it a month or two before I consider wiping it out. Now I have be privy to a few of the trials that came in the development of the new system, particularly the network stack.

So now my question, is it worth it keeping it on my computer? What should I be looking for? What issue are common? etc?

I have been liking it so far, but I am concerned, because I heard nothing good about this OS since it came out.

If you plan on downgrading to XP, expect difficulty in finding drivers. Some you will have to modify to get components working properly.

You are probably best off sticking with Vista. Don't go to stupid sites. Don't use Limewire. Don't be an AOL user and everything will be fine.

Don't use your computer like a computer, but rather treat it like a rare china artifact that must be babied in every way.

Yeah, vista sucks. XP will be my last Windows-based OS.

Yea, I get that part. I managed, about three years ago, to have an XP laptop without a scanner/firewall for over a year without getting a virus or what not. Remember boys and girls to always practice safe surfing.

I am worried that I will not be able to find linux drivers for the laptop, so I am concerned switching it over. I won't downgrade it to XP, at least not at this point. I have heard some decent stuff about it.

Linux unlike windows has virtually every driver you will ever need already in it. So for most people you will never have to deal with drivers on linux.

- As with all things there are a couple exceptions. Linux will run perfectly fine on just about any graphics card you could ever hope to come across right out of the box, but to get 3D acceleration on ATI or Nvidia gpus you need to install proprietary Graphics drivers, in Ubuntu thats a one click job and you are prompted, there is no trawling the internet trying how to figure this out, its so simple you'll be wondering if you missed something.

- Some wifi cards don't work straight off. If your particular wifi card has a linux driver it will just work straight off. If it doesn't there are options Madwifi is little piece of software that lets you use the windows driver for the wifi card on linux. But thats hassle.

So if your interested in linux but are scared it might not run on your hardware, here is what to do, at no risk to your current installed OS.

Live CD's are your friend when checking whether linux will run ok on your laptop/PC.

1) Download Ubuntu 8.04 from there website (Using ubuntu here purely because everyone these days seems to think that ubuntu IS linux)

2) burn it to CD

3) insert CD into laptop

4) restart the computer

5) Let the CD boot up (This wont do a thing to your HDD, don't worry its not going to nuke windows)

5.5) wait

6) if you get to the desktop, try connecting to the internet by wifi

7) if you got to the desktop and you can connect to the internet i would be 99.99% certain that you will not have any driver issues and you can click on the icon called install (clicking install obvious will do stuff to your HDD :P)

Things might have changed since I did ubuntu 7.10 on my old laptop a few months back. That being said, unless the version is tailored for it, I have always had issues installing linux on a laptop, regardless of the distro.

I don't think it would be hard, I haven't looked on my system restore CDs to see if there is actually linux drivers for the ATI card on it. I doubt they will include the drivers, but I haven't been watching Sonys to closely lately.

I might give it a try, if Vista seems to work well then I will leave it on, if not then Some flavor of linux will be used.

Newer *buntu releases have a restricted driver wizard. What happens is that the first time you log in after installing it, you will be notified that there is a restricted driver available for your graphics card and you are given the option to install it. Clicking yes does everything for you.
