I did PHP programming professionally a few years ago, and the devs where I work have just rolled out a massive PHP app for NASA a few weeks ago. PHP is nice, and it's OO features have come a long way in the space between, but for doing much more than dabbling, it gets really dumb really fast.

I'm not sure what I'm looking to replace it with for my own purposes, but ruby and perl are the main contenders right now.

Ironically, that sounds remarkably like what the pokemon tourny kiddies were saying while milling about Wizard World this year. Made me want to pick one of em up by the scruff of the neck and yell, You know NOTHING about perl, now GO THE FUCK AWAY. Which made me feel very, very old.

Anyone else use Eclipse?

My new job requires me to use Eclipse and java for the first time ever. I've gotta say after giving it a fair chance (2 months) i can now say that it really really really sucks.

Eclipse its-self manages to crash and run out of memory on a regular basis, and the really annoying part is that after Eclipse has crash re-starting it and getting back into my workspace can take up to 40 mins while nothing much really happens.

Its not like my pc is rubbish either its got a dual 3GHz processors and 2GB of ram, its just that eclipse can't handle large projects very well.

As for the application i am working on shudder, well its a re-write of a C++ version in java that was ditched after 4 years of development because it got too complicated to work on.

This java version is made up from about 40 projects in the workspace and running it uses about 1GB of ram even when nothings really happening.

The overhead on a java application is huge...........................

Im going to pitch a plan to re-write the re-write back into C++. They will love that.........

I've used Eclipse for smaller projects, with good results. Eclipse is a multi-purpose environment, however, and I must say if I'm coding Java I much prefer J-Builder.

That sounds like a monsterproject, though... How 'bout rewriting the whole fucker from scratch? Less baggage.

Agree. Your greatest source. Google.

That and HTML isn't coding. It is a mark up language.

Anyone up for a fun collab? I'm looking to make a flash-based FF:T sort of experience. I've got some experience in AS, socket servers, security and authentication and such, but looking for more people to help with code, and more importantly, sprites. Hit me up if it sounds good.
