One and a half ovens? Gas range?
Can you install a shower head over the bath and add a curtain rail?
Bakelite cabinets can be worth a mint... hell, bakelite fashion bracelets are worth $150 & up. Bleach cleaners do funny things to bakelite (I used to have a vintage toilet seat). Plain detergent, I say.
Keep all the old stuff you can, it sounds amazing :)

Yea- especially when you consider they're only on 2/3 of an acre. You could maybe have one sheep there?

It'd keep the grass nice and short though, no need for a lawn mower.

I've actually never had it. Heard good things about it (one of my classmates actually owns a goat dairy).

In the states you can buy it at places like whole foods- so I would buy a small container and give it a try if you are interested.

Are you asking about keeping a dairy goat? or just drinking goats milk in general?

The difficulty with goats is that milk, fiber, and meat breeds are all pretty separate. You'd have to find a good crossbreed of the first two (of which I have a handful, but that's neither here nor there).

Secondarily, in order to get milk, you'd a) have to have a doe, and b) breed her. Which then gets into the question of what to do with the offspring--keep, sell, eat, etc. Not to mention finding a buck and what type, depending on whether you want to do anything but eat the offspring.

Then, you'd have to milk the goat 1-2x a day, plus deal with the supplies for milking, whether or not to keep the kid on the doe, whether she will let her milk down for anyone other than the kid if it's on her, and what to do with the milk afterwards (raw? pasteurized?), and how to deal with a surplus.

Not to mention, if the doe's raised for fiber and depending upon the breed, you have to comb out or shear her (hand or clippers?). Combing out is for goats carrying the cashmere gene; Kit's allergic to mohair (Angora breeds), so that's the only kind of use to her. Which means that the offspring may or may not carry the same gene--there's no "cashmere" breed. Shearing is a twice-a-year effort, but combing requires regular upkeep, and the yield is not nearly as great as on angoras (which is one of the reasons for the high price of cashmere).

Once she gets the fleece, there's still washing (usually 2x), combing out to remove vegetable matter and align the fibers (creating roving), and spinning it up to create yarn, which then can be dyed. Alternatively, she can comb out and send the whole thing off for processing, but she'll have to find a reputable processor and then pay for it.

In the meantime, there's upkeep for the goat--supplemental feed, shelter, deworming, mineral blocks, baking soda, hoof trimming and the required equipment for that, as well stud fees and vet bills for any delivery complications if bred. Not to mention--zoning laws may easily prohibit the keeping of any livestock, including goats.

Trust me, livestock can be a total PITA and money sink. *laugh* Looking at all of the above, I wonder what the fuck am I thinking with all these critters?. Were Kit not allergic to mohair, I'd suggest she keep an Angora rabbit for her fiber jones. :P

I think people that insist that Google/the internet is making us dumber mischaracterize what being intelligent is all about. Knowing a bazillion things is good, but knowing how to look up twice a bazillion things is way better. We're outsourcing our data storage so that we can keep just an index in the wetware. I think this is a massive improvement.

Val: Smudging already done! I'm going to do another one when we're finished cleaning and before we really start moving things in. Creepy room isn't so creepy anymore. I walked in, and talked to it, and it kind of settled down. I guess... there's some leftoverness of childhood left that it wants back.

Blue: As soon as it cools off enough to bake! No AC, so no high oven use until later.

Hade: As for the panelling? I can't fucking stand it. It's only in the bedroom that it's absolutely pleasekillmenow godawful and we can't afford to tear it down and put up sheetrock right now, so it's getting painted today. We have other priorities (mainly, paying our bills and putting a shower in the bathroom). The panelling WILL come down. We're going to go room by room, but we're not going to start a room until we have the money to do it in full - and right. Neither of us want to live in a construction zone, and with kittens? We can't live in a construction zone.

Everyone else: THANKS!

One and a half ovens IN THE KITCHEN. There's another one in the garage. Electric range in the kitchen, and in the garage.

We're thinking about that, since I don't want to rip out the bakelite. Tea tree oil did wonders on it. It's so clllleaaaaan.

I hate being up this early in the morning.

Linear, must be the different universities. Most of our marks were online tests that we could do using online tools. So we really didn't need to know how to do it, at least until the finals. The stuff was easy enough.

We didn't have that luxury when it came to discrete. We had to know that stuff, if I could have brought a laptop and such... yea. A lot easier.

Different universities different expectations I suppose. Though Val did make a valid point. With respect to computer science it is more important that you know how to find something and easily apply it than it was to know it verbatim. It was odd that way, though once I got out programming in the real world, it made sense. You know essentially Dick, but you can also find it reasonably quickly.

I hear you on hating the panelling... My house has that in the 1st floor back room, and I hate it too...

So far, I repainted every room on the 2nd floor, and that is basically livable now, like a mini apartment (2 bedrooms, large livingroom, small kitchen, small eating area, and bathroom up there)... On the first floor, there is the garage, and 2 other rooms... But I have NO idea what I want to do with em yet...

I'm thinking of putting a nice large modern kitchen into the back room I mentioned (but that invloves pulling the panelling, putting up sheetrock, moving a small wall about a foot back, redoing the entire foor, and then, adding the kitchen last). I don't have money for this yet, so, I'm thinking that will all happen down the line... I'll keep you guys updated...

I should be moving in next week, so YEY! I finally have my own place... (oh, and Congrats once more on you guys getting your new place as well...)

This wasn't an online course in any way. I don't think he had anything but the syllabus up there. We did proofs and stuff in that class. Nontrivial proofs at that. Bleh.

subject: because
because because becauuuse I suck at arguments concerning emotion. I usually opt for the Eject button. And I take my time with some grudges.

Today is win because being understood and forgiven is a big load off my shoulders. When it comes from those who've known you that many years, it's enough to make you fly. Sure, one recent instance is not an official 'apology' - they only sent a 1 line birthday greeting after vowing to never ever ever ever ever ever EVER talk to me again - but I shall take what I can get.

It's a methane friendly bumper sticker. It's good to let go.
